Just One Last Dance

London, England, Britain, Earth.

The Tardis lands and he gets off. It is white everywhere. It’s December 24th, 2056, another white Christmas Eve.  There’s a blue house right in front of him. It seems like the Tardis has intruded into someone’s garden, which keeps him calm for they always do this thing. But he still gets amazed. He’s confused because it’s impossible. What makes the Tardis take him here, he wonders. Soon he can see why. It is not HIS world, which he knows as soon as he steps outside the Tardis, but HERS.

Now he sees her again after 50 years have split them apart. Not just time, but also the universe which the Doctor and his Tardis are not able to travel through. And he knows what leads the Tardis to this world as well. She’s sleeping with a weak breath, and he’s just standing by her bed, gazing at her. Even 50 years cannot take her beauty away, the Doctor thinks. Suddenly she comes to consciousness. She blinks, and feels like someone is being around her.

“Who’s there?” She senses. The Doctor comes out from the shadow, without a word, just showing his face to her. Rose’s sure she’s never seen this man before. “Who are you?” she asks. The Doctor answers, “I’m ... It’s me, Rose.” He steps forwards to let her see his new face clearly and sees into her eyes. And Rose is sure that she doesn’t hear this voice before. Yes, she’s strange to this face, but she’s definitely familiar with his other faces for she’s closed her eyes and seen them all these years, which makes her even more familiar with those faces than she was in the past days.

“Doctor...... Doctor?” The Doctor can hear the trembles in Rose’s voice. She’s old, and weak. “Yes, Rose. Yes, it’s me!” Thanks to the moonlight coming through the window, the Doctor sees her eyes are glinting. He smiles. The Doctor always laughs with Rose Tyler. Rose is still confused, she can’t understand. “But how? How can you be here?” “I don’t know, Rose. The Tardis takes me here. She’s outside.” Rose sees her, right standing in her garden. “It’s always nice to see you. The universe didn’t collapse and I suppose we can have a safe talk for a while. So, Rose Tyler, tell me how was you day? Oh wait, is it your bedroom? Where’s him? I wanna see him! Another me! Wait, aren’t you getting a divorce? Where’s Mickey boy? I even miss him!” He’s excited to see her again. The Doctor looks around this room and sees nobody except her. “Where’s everybody?” He asks Rose.

Rose Tyler looks at the Doctor’s eyes, the strange eyes that she’s never seen, and says, “Gone, Doctor. Just like you. Like what you’ve done to me years ago, they left.” She gets up and leans on the headboard. Now shocked is the Doctor. He whispers, “It’s impossible. I leave you a safe world! And I leave him to you. You should be safe... And not alone.” He is eager to know what happened to her in this awful world, this world without the Doctor. “It was the Daleks and the Cybermen. They came to this world from the Void. It was a disaster, many people died,” her face shows that she tries remembering something really not good, and she looks back at the Doctor’s face, “We don’t know how but those aliens did come in alliance and finally went with them, my families. Do you want to know how we beat them back?” No! His hearts scream for he sees despair filled in her eyes. He can’t see them. But Rose doesn’t stop. “He died to rescue me. He died in the siege of those alien bugs, and I watched him explode. You know what, he was the last one who left me. Dad and mum, and Mickey, they were all gone. Only me, Doctor.” It seems it’s not the Doctor who is standing here right in front of her at this moment, but him, that dead man. The Doctor sees no more yearning from her face but half love and half hopelessness. “I’m sorry, Rose. I’m really sorry I wasn’t here.” He opens his arms and gives Rose a hug. She doesn’t move nor hug him back. The Doctor can feel she’s trembling. Rose staring the Tardis outside the window, says, ”Yeah... I know. You weren’t here, Doctor, otherwise you would come and save my life.” She closes her eyes desperately but the tears still run out of the beautiful pair of amber.

“But you would never come.” Hearing the whimper, he opens his eye wide and asks with shock, “Are you saying you are in hatred of me?” “No. No, Doctor, I’m so in love with you.” Rose shakes her head firmly.

She smiles. The Doctor finally sees his treasure again after his endless travel in the other world throughout all these years. “It’s snowing. Do you want to dance with me in my garden? I wanna dance.” Rose reaches out her hand to the man. “Oh, Rose...” When the Doctor is hesitating, Rose takes his hand. “Oh come on. You said you got your moves. This world won’t end because the Doctor comes and dances, right?” He laughs.

The Doctor lifts Rose to his chest and comes to where the Tardis stands. “My knowledge tells me it’s not the ash of some spaceships. What do you say, Doctor?” Rose giggles and asks to her Doctor. He smiles and turns on the music on the Tardis, which Rose never knows how. “I miss you, you little girl.” She nestles against the big blue box that is bigger on the inside, waiting the stranger to have the last dance with her.

A waltz is filling up the air. Two people cuddling each other tight are dancing in the white snow. It’s a night for the lost thing being found.

“Tell me, Doctor, how was you day after me?” Rose leaning her head on the Doctor’s shoulder, asks. “Oh, I told you. Same old stories. Kind of being the last Time Lord.”

“Right.”

“Oh! I can share you with this. It was on a Christmas, well, while the world was still a restless place for me, that I met a girl named Astrid on the Titanic,” and the Doctor adds, “not the Royal Mail Steamer Titanic, the spaceship Titanic! I was just wandering around and she was a stewardess on it, quite like what you were. Well, obviously we met some problems and I fixed it! I danced with her before I offered her a ride, Astrid. You want to know where she’s going to?”

“Where?”

“Barcelona!”

Obvious, the Doctor is going to finish his sharing when Rose Tyler interrupts, “Not the city Barcelona, the planet Barcelona.”

“Brilliant! Your memories don’t age! And you know what, the last words she said to me was that she bet I will be lying with my love on next Christmas day. Funny!”

Rose is just chuckling. “Thank you, Doctor. I don’t wanna be alone on a Christmas Eve, not this night. I really don’t like being left. Thank you.”

“Me neither. I will never lose you again, Rose, I give you my words.”

“Can I ask you for one last thing?” Tyler asks.

“Your wish is my command.” The Doctor gives her the permission as he always does.

Rose wraps her arms around him harder. It’s so quiet that she can even hear his two hearts beat. It seems like other 50 years pass before Rose Tyler whispers ”I love you” in his ears. The waltz has come to the end. It’s too quiet. Quiet enough for the Doctor to hear only two hearts are beating. “Quite right too... Am I losing all the chances to say it? Rose Tyler...” The last Time Lord standing in one of the thousands of universes cannot help but sob uncontrollably.

Only at this time does the wise Doctor come to realize why his Tardis takes him to this world where he ought not to come. And he tells this secret to Rose Tyler, the sleeping beauty in his arms, “I should have known. ‘Love is the one thing that transcends time and space’, once I heard. You must know it before I do, Rose Tyler, you’re a genius!” He engraves a slight kiss on her white hairs.

The Doctor really should leave. He has nothing left in this universe, and he’s supposed to get back to his world. He puts Rose back to her bed and before he closes the door, he turns to the old lonely lady lying lifelessly and begins to talk to himself, “So many places I was gonna show you, so many people I’d like you to meet... My body’s tired of travelling. I bet you will love it and even kiss me if I show you the dogs with no nose, am I right?”

Lucky Rose Tyler, she can still hear the sound of Tardis which is not easy to be heard by other people.
